21.8 The Conjunction 不過 bat1 gwo3 (‘but’)

The conjunction 不過 bat1 gwo3 means ‘but’. We use 不過 bat1 gwo3 to introduce an idea that contrasts with what was said before. We put 不過 bat1 gwo3 at the beginning of the clause with the contrasting idea.

A:你有冇食過壽司人呀?
nei5 jau5 mou5 sik6 gwo3 sau6 si1 jan4 aa3?
Have you eaten at Sushiet before?
B:有呀,不過佢哋啲嘢有啲貴。
jau5 aa3, bat1 gwo3 keoi5 dei6 di1 je5 jau5 di1 gwai3.
Yes, but their things [their food] are a bit expensive.
We use the classifier 啲 di1 with 嘢 je5 because 嘢 je5 refers to food here, which is uncountable.
