Audio is not available for this page yet.

We can put the aspect particle 下 haa5 (also written as 吓) after a verb to indicate that we do an activity for a while or casually. The meaning of 下 haa5 is similar to ‘to … for a while’ (as in to run for a while) or ‘to have a …’ (as in to have a run). In grammar, this aspect is called the delimitative aspect.

我去跑步。
ngo5 heoi3 paau2 bou6.
I go to run.
我去跑步。
ngo5 heoi3 paau2 haa5 bou6.
I go to run for a while / I go to have a run.

When making a suggestion or extending an invitation, we often use 下 haa5 to make the activity sound more casual or easier to do.

你有冇興趣試呀?
nei5 jau5 mou5 hing3 ceoi3 si3 aa3?
Are you interested in trying?
你有冇興趣試呀?
nei5 jau5 mou5 hing3 ceoi3 si3 haa5 aa3?
Are you interested in having a try?
In the second sentence, 下 haa5 indicates the activity 試 si3 is done casually. This makes the activity sound easier to do.
