1.1 Personal Pronouns
🔍 Observe!
Observe the personal pronouns and complete the description.
We add ________ behind a single personal pronoun (for one person) to form a plural personal pronoun (for more than one person).
1.
We add 哋 dei6 behind a single personal pronoun to form a plural personal pronoun.
⚠️ This rule is only applied to personal pronouns, but not other nouns.
2.
佢 keoi5 and 佢哋 keoi5 dei6 don’t indicate the gender of the person or people being referred to.
3.
In English, the pronouns it and they can be used to refer to something that does not have life.
In Cantonese, we mostly use 佢 keoi5 and 佢哋 keoi5 dei6 to refer to human being or something animate (i.e. having life or sensations).
4.
In English, personal pronouns for the subject and the object in a sentence are different.
In Cantonese, we use the same sets of personal pronouns for both the subject and the object in a sentence.
The same pronoun 佢 keoi5 is used as the subject and the object.
1.2 The Verb 係 hai6
The verb 係 hai6 means ‘to be’. We form a sentence with 係 hai6 using the sentence structure below.
(Noun Phrase)
hai6
(Noun Phrase)
A subject complement indicates the identity of the subject or describes the subject. We generally use a noun phrase as the subject complement after 係 hai6. Note that a personal pronoun or a name can be a noun phrase on its own.
He is Fung [a male name].The subject complement 阿峰 aa3 fung1 indicates the identity of the subject 佢 keoi5. He / She is a Hong Konger.
The subject complement 香港人 hoeng1 gong2 jan4 describes the subject 佢 keoi5.
1.3 Verb Conjugation
In English, verbs conjugate, or change in their form, according to the subject of the sentence.
In Cantonese, verbs don’t conjugate. A verb always has the same form, no matter what subject.
-
我係阿峰。
ngo5 hai6 aa3 fung1.
I am Fung [a name]. -
你係阿希?
nei5 hai6 aa3 hei1?
You (singular) are Hei [a unisex name]? -
佢係Sarah。
keoi5 hai6 Sarah.
She is Sarah. -
我哋係香港人。
ngo5 dei6 hai6 hoeng1 gong2 jan4.
We are Hong Kongers. -
你哋係日本人?
nei5 dei6 hai6 jat6 bun2 jan4?
You (plural) are Japanese? -
佢哋係法國人。
keoi5 dei6 hai6 faat3 gwok3 jan4.
They are French.
1.4 Introduction to Sentence Particles
🔍 Observe!
Observe the sentences. The highlighted words are a type of words called sentence particles.
-
佢係Jeffrey呀?
keoi5 hai6 Jeffrey aa4? -
我識廣東話同英文咋。
ngo5 sik1 gwong2 dung1 waa2 tung4 jing1 man2 zaa3. -
我好鍾意佢呀!
ngo5 hou2 zung1 ji3 keoi5 aa3!
Where do the sentence particles appear in a sentence?
________Sentence particles (SPs) are a type of words that we add at the end of a sentence. They can perform different functions in a sentence. Here are some examples:
Forming a Question
-
佢係Jeffrey。
keoi5 hai6 Jeffrey.
He is Jeffrey. -
佢係Jeffrey呀?
keoi5 hai6 Jeffrey aa4?
He is Jeffrey?
The sentence particle 呀 aa4 is added to turn the sentence into a question.
Adding Meaning to a Sentence
-
我識廣東話同英文。
ngo5 sik1 gwong2 dung1 waa2 tung4 jing1 man2.
I know Cantonese and English. -
我識廣東話同英文咋。
ngo5 sik1 gwong2 dung1 waa2 tung4 jing1 man2 zaa3.
I only know Cantonese and English.
The sentence particle 咋 zaa3 adds the meaning of ‘only’ to the sentence.
Changing the Tone of a Sentence
Note that the word tone here refers to the emotion of a sentence, not the pitch of a syllable.
-
我好鍾意佢。
ngo5 hou2 zung1 ji3 keoi5.
I like him / her so much. -
我好鍾意佢呀!
ngo5 hou2 zung1 ji3 keoi5 aa3!
I like him / her so much!
The sentence particle 呀 aa3 makes the tone of the sentence stronger.
There are a lot more functions that sentence particles can perform. We will discover them as we proceed.
1.5 The Sentence Particle 呀 aa3 I (Question)
When asking a question, we can optionally add the sentence particle 呀 aa3 at the end of the question.
-
你叫咩名呀?
nei5 giu3 me1 meng2 aa3?
What is your name? -
佢係邊個呀?
keoi5 hai6 bin1 go3 aa3?
Who is he / she?
Note that adding 呀 aa3 is not enough to turn a sentence into a question. To form a question, we need a question word or a question construction. 呀 aa3 only serves as a supplementary means to help signal a question. Look at the examples again. There is a question word in each question.
-
你叫咩名呀?
nei5 giu3 me1 meng2 aa3?
What is your name?
This question has the question word 咩 me1 (‘what’). -
佢係邊個呀?
keoi5 hai6 bin1 go3 aa3?
Who is he / she?
This question has the question word 邊個 bin1 go3 (‘who’).
1.6 Applying Rising Intonation to Questions
When asking a question, we can optionally apply rising intonation to the question. To apply rising intonation, we raise the pitch of the last syllable and say the syllable a bit longer.
↗
你叫咩名?
nei5 giu3 me1 meng2?
What is your name?
↗
佢係邊個?
keoi5 hai6 bin1 go3?
Who is he / she?
We can either add the sentence particle 呀 aa3 or apply rising intonation to a question, but we don’t do both at the same time.
→
你叫咩名呀?
nei5 giu3 me1 meng2 aa3?
What is your name?
↗
你叫咩名?
nei5 giu3 me1 meng2?
What is your name?
1.7 The Sentence Particle 呢 ne1 (‘how about’)
The sentence particle 呢 ne1 functions like how about in English. We use 呢 ne1 to ask about a different thing in a conversation by adding 呢 ne1 after the thing we want to ask about.
你叫咩名呀?
nei5 giu3 me1 meng2 aa3?
What is your name?
我叫阿瑩,你呢?
ngo5 giu3 aa3 jing4, nei5 ne1?
My name is Ying. How about you?
我叫Matthew。
ngo5 giu3 Matthew.
My name is Matthew.
我識日文。
ngo5 sik1 jat6 man2.
I know Japanese.
韓文呢?
hon4 man2 ne1?
How about Korean?
我都識韓文。
ngo5 dou1 sik1 hon4 man2.
I know Korean too.
1.8 Personal Names
Hong Kong Cantonese speakers usually have a full name with three syllables. The first syllable is the surname. The second and third syllables are the first name.
Some people have a first name with only one syllable. In that case, the full name consists of only two syllables.
There are a few two-syllable surnames (e.g., 歐陽 au1 joeng4 and 司徒 si1 tou4). Depending on whether the first name contains one or two syllables, the full name may consist of three or four syllables.
After we choose a Cantonese name, the name will be translated into English based on the Cantonese pronunciation. Note that this English translation differs from the Romanized Cantonese we use, as it follows a different set of rules by convention. The English translation is used in items like identity cards and credit cards.
In everyday life, we don’t often use full names to refer to someone, except in school. Here are some common ways to refer to someone.
1.
We take the last syllable of the name and add the prefix for names 阿 aa3 before it.
⚠️ The prefix for names 阿 aa3 and the sentence particle 呀 aa3 are pronounced the same, but they are different words.
阿 aa3 + Last syllable of name
陳漢發 → 阿 + 發 = 阿發
can4 hon3 faat3 → aa3 + faat3 = aa3 faat3
羅穎詩 → 阿 + 詩 = 阿詩
lo4 wing6 si1 → aa3 + si1 = aa3 si1
2.
It is also common to use English names, especially in workplace. If the English name has only one syllable (e.g., May, Pat), we often add the prefix for names 阿 aa3 before it.
阿 aa3 + English name with one syllable
May → 阿 + May = 阿May
May → aa3 + May = aa3 May
Pat → 阿 + Pat = 阿Pat
Pat → aa3 + Pat = aa3 Pat
3.
When we refer to a child or want to refer to someone intimately, we can take the last syllable of the name and duplicate it.
⚠️ We rarely refer to ourselves this way.
Last syllable of name + Last syllable of name
鄭有傑 → 傑 + 傑 = 傑傑
zeng6 jau5 git6 → git6 + git6 = git6 git6
鄭有俊 → 俊 + 俊 = 俊俊
zeng6 jau5 zeon3 → zeon3 + zeon3 = zeon3 zeon3
If the last syllable of the name is the low falling tone (Tone 4), we often change the duplicated syllable to the high rising tone (Tone 2).
Last syllable of name (Tone 4) + Last syllable of name (Tone 4 → Tone 2)
周志良 → 良 + 良 = 良良
zau1 zi3 loeng4 → loeng4 + loeng2 = loeng4 loeng2
林子圓 → 圓 + 圓 = 圓圓
lam4 zi2 jyun4 → jyun4 + jyun2 = jyun4 jyun2

Communication
In the Communication section, you will learn:
- Saying someone’s name
- Identifying someone by name
Saying Someone’s Name
- 叫 giu3 in this context means ‘to be called’, in the sense of ‘to be given a particular name’.
- 咩 me1 is a question word and means ‘what’. We will learn more about it later. Just remember its meaning for now.
- SP = Sentence particle
We can also say our name first and then ask the other person’s name.
Identifying Someone by Name
- Say 係 hai6 longer.
Generally, we can use 叫 giu3 and 係 hai6 interchangeably in situations where we need to say or ask someone’s name. However, we usually use 係 hai6 when a person’s identity is important in the situation (e.g., visiting a company with an appointment).

In the real world, many of the syllables are used in both positions. Feel free to play around with the characters and find a combination that is pleasing to your ears!
It is usually not easy to come up with a gender-neutral name using these common first names. Most of them are associated with a specific gender.
