1.7 The Sentence Particle 呢 ne1 (‘how about’)
The sentence particle 呢 ne1 functions like how about in English. We use 呢 ne1 to ask about a different thing in a conversation by adding 呢 ne1 after the thing we want to ask about.
A:
你叫咩名呀?
nei5 giu3 me1 meng2 aa3?
What is your name?
B:
我叫阿瑩,你呢?
ngo5 giu3 aa3 jing4, nei5 ne1?
My name is Ying. How about you?
A:
我叫Matthew。
ngo5 giu3 Matthew.
My name is Matthew.
呢 ne1 is added after 你 nei5 (‘you’).
A:
我識日文。
ngo5 sik1 jat6 man2.
I know Japanese.
B:
韓文呢?
hon4 man2 ne1?
How about Korean?
A:
我都識韓文。
ngo5 dou1 sik1 hon4 man2.
I know Korean too.
呢 ne1 is added after 韓文 hon4 man2 (‘Korean’).
