In Grammar and Vocabulary 16.8, we learned that we put an adverb (the default adverb 好 hou2 or other degree words) between the subject and the predicative adjective.

There are some situations where we don’t need to add the adverb. In this lesson, we will see the following two situations. Both occur when we ask and answer questions.

Situation 1

We usually don’t need to add an adverb when asking and answering yes-no questions formed with the X-not-X construction of a predicative adjective.

A:你呢排忙唔忙呀?
nei5 ni1 paai4 mong4 m4 mong4 aa3?
Are you busy recently?
B:忙呀。
mong4 aa3.
Yes.
The question is formed with the X-not-X construction 忙唔忙 mong4 m4 mong4.

Situation 2

We also usually don’t need to add an adverb when asking and answering questions formed with a question word (e.g., 幾時 gei2 si4 ‘when’, 邊度 bin1 dou6 ‘where’).

A:你幾時得閒呀?
nei5 gei2 si4 dak1 haan4 aa3?
When are you free?
B:我星期六得閒。
ngo5 sing1 kei4 luk6 dak1 haan4.
I am free on Saturday.
The question is formed with the question word 幾時 gei2 si4.
