8.1 The Verb 係 hai6 (‘to be’) II
In Grammar and Vocabulary 4.2, we learned to use the adverb 唔 m4 (‘not’) to negate a verb in the present tense.
We can also use 唔 m4 to negate the verb 係 hai6 (‘to be’) in the present tense.
我係日本人嚟嘅。
ngo5 hai6 jat6 bun2 jan4 lai4 ge3.
I am Japanese.
↓
我唔係日本人嚟嘅。
ngo5 m4 hai6 jat6 bun2 jan4 lai4 ge3.
I am not Japanese.
⚠️ When a sentence only has the sentence particle 嚟 lai4 but not the verb 係 hai6, we don’t use the adverb 唔 m4 because there is no verb to negate in the sentence.
❌ 我唔日本人嚟嘅。
ngo5 m4 jat6 bun2 jan4 lai4 ge3.
✔️ 我唔係日本人嚟嘅。
ngo5 m4 hai6 jat6 bun2 jan4 lai4 ge3.
I am not Japanese.
In Grammar and Vocabulary 4.4, we learned to use the X-not-X construction to form yes-no questions in the present tense.
We can also use the X-not-X construction to form yes-no questions with the verb 係 hai6 in the present tense. We use the questions to ask whether the identity or description of the subject is true or false, without assuming what the answer should be. It is like questions that begin with are you in English (e.g., Are you Japanese?).
你係唔係日本人嚟㗎?
nei5 hai6 m4 hai6 jat6 bun2 jan4 lai4 gaa3?
Are you Japanese?
We often contract 係唔係 hai6 m4 hai6 to 係咪 hai6 mai6.
你係咪日本人嚟㗎?
nei5 hai6 mai6 jat6 bun2 jan4 lai4 gaa3?
Are you Japanese?
⚠️ We don’t contract 唔係 m4 hai6 to 咪 mai6 when we use 唔係 m4 hai6 alone.
❌ 我咪日本人嚟嘅。
ngo5 mai5 jat6 bun2 jan4 lai4 ge3.
✔️ 我唔係日本人嚟嘅。
ngo5 m4 hai6 jat6 bun2 jan4 lai4 ge3.
I am not Japanese.
To answer the question, we can give a short answer or a long answer. We give a short answer more often.
For long answers, if the question has the verb 係 hai6 and the sentence particles 嚟 lai4 and 嘅 ge3 (also 㗎 gaa3 and 嘅 ge2), we can usually use the sentence particle 呀 aa3 or 㗎 gaa3. We will use 㗎 gaa3 in this lesson.
8.2 Applying Rising Intonation to Confirm Something
We sometimes have a guess, an observation or a realization based on information in the context (e.g., what someone has said or what we have noticed). To confirm whether we are correct, we can apply rising intonation to the sentence to form a question.
你係日本人嚟嘅。
nei5 hai6 jat6 bun2 jan4 lai4 ge3.
You are Japanese.
↓
你係日本人嚟嘅?
nei5 hai6 jat6 bun2 jan4 lai4 ge2?
You are Japanese?
Notice when rising intonation is applied, the sentence particle 嘅 ge3 becomes 嘅 ge2 ( 嘅 ge3 + Rising Intonation ↗ = 嘅 ge2).
We answer this type of question like answering yes-no questions. We can give a short answer or a long answer. We give a short answer more often.
When answering this type of question, we say 係呀 hai6 aa3 to mean ‘yes’ and 唔係呀 m4 hai6 aa3 to mean ‘no’ even if the verb of the question is not 係 hai6.
| A: | 你做老師嘅? nei5 zou6 lou5 si1 ge2? You work as a teacher? |
| B: | → 係呀。 hai6 aa3. Yes. → 唔係呀。 m4 hai6 aa3. No. |
8.3 The Sentence Particle 呀 aa4 (Confirmation)
We sometimes have a guess, an observation or a realization based on information in the context (e.g., what someone has said or what we have noticed). To confirm whether we are correct, we can add the sentence particle 呀 aa4 at the end of the sentence to form a question. We usually use 呀 aa4 only when we are quite certain that we are correct.
你係日本人嚟嘅。
nei5 hai6 jat6 bun2 jan4 lai4 ge3.
You are Japanese.
↓
你係日本人嚟嘅呀?
nei5 hai6 jat6 bun2 jan4 lai4 ge3 aa4?
You are Japanese?
When we add 呀 aa4 after the sentence particle 嘅 ge3, we usually contract 嘅 ge3 and 呀 aa4 to 㗎 gaa4.
你係日本人嚟㗎?
nei5 hai6 jat6 bun2 jan4 lai4 gaa4?
You are Japanese?
We answer this type of question like answering yes-no questions. We can give a short answer or a long answer. We give a short answer more often.
When answering a question with 呀 aa4, we say 係呀 hai6 aa3 to mean ‘yes’ and 唔係呀 m4 hai6 aa3 to mean ‘no’ even if the verb of the question is not 係 hai6.
| A: | 你做老師㗎? nei5 zou6 lou5 si1 gaa4? You work as a teacher? |
| B: | → 係呀。 hai6 aa3. Yes. → 唔係呀。 m4 hai6 aa3. No. |
To confirm something, we can either apply rising intonation or add the sentence particle 呀 aa4, but we don’t do both at the same time.
你係日本人嚟嘅? (嘅 ge3 + Rising Intonation ↗ = 嘅 ge2)
nei5 hai6 jat6 bun2 jan4 lai4 ge2?

nei5 hai6 jat6 bun2 jan4 lai4 gaa4?
You are Japanese?
⚠️ Notice the sentence particles 呀 aa4 (for confirmation) and 呀 aa3 (for questions, emphasis or softening the tone) are different in their tone. We say 呀 aa4 with the low falling tone and 呀 aa3 with the mid level tone.
8.4 The Preposition 喺 hai2 / 响 hoeng2 II (‘from’)
In Grammar and Vocabulary 7.2, we learned that the preposition 喺 hai2 (also pronounced as 响 hoeng2) means ‘in, on, at’.
The preposition 喺 hai2 (also pronounced as 响 hoeng2) can also mean ‘from’. We use 喺 hai2 to indicate where someone or something comes from. We put a location after 喺 hai2 to form a prepositional phrase.
We put the prepositional phrase before the verb we want to modify.
The actual meaning of the preposition 喺 hai2 depends on the context. Compare these two sentences:
我喺日本嚟嘅。 (喺 hai2 = from)
ngo5 hai2 jat6 bun2 lei4 ge3.
I come from Japan.
喺 hai2 in this sentence is used to indicate where 我 ngo5 comes from. It means ‘from’ in this context.
我喺中環返工嘅。 (喺 hai2 = in)
ngo5 hai2 zung1 waan4 faan1 gung1 ge3.
I go to work in Central.
喺 hai2 in this sentence is used to indicate where the activity 返工 faan1 gung1 takes place. It means ‘in’ in this context.
8.5 Serial Verb Constructions I (Purpose)
We can form a verb phrase with a verb alone, or with a verb and an object.
The verb phrase 玩 waan2 is formed with the verb 玩 waan2 alone. The verb phrase 探朋友 taam3 pang4 jau5 is formed with the verb 探 taam3 and the object 朋友 pang4 jau5.In Cantonese, it is common to use two or more verb phrases consecutively without adding any conjunctions in between. In grammar, we call this type of construction a serial verb construction.
This serial verb construction consists of two verb phrases: 嚟香港 lai4 hoeng1 gong2 and 玩 waan2. Notice the two verb phrases are put right next to each other, without any conjunctions added between them. This serial verb construction consists of two verb phrases: 去日本 heoi3 jat6 bun2 and 探朋友 taam3 pang4 jau5. Notice the two verb phrases are put right next to each other, without any conjunctions added between them. The verb phrases in a serial verb construction can have different meaning relationships. In this lesson, we will learn this meaning relationship: the second verb phrase indicates the purpose of the first verb phrase. For this type of meaning relationship, one common type of verb that appears in the first verb phrase is a verb that indicates movement to a location, such as 嚟 lai4 (‘to come’, as pronounced as lei4), 去 heoi3 (‘to go’) and 返 faan1 (‘to go back’). Also, the subject will be the person who performs the activities of both verb phrases.
The second verb phrase 玩 waan2 is the purpose of the first verb phrase 嚟香港 lai4 hoeng1 gong2. The person comes to Hong Kong because he or she wants to have fun in Hong Kong. The subject 我 ngo5 is the person who performs both 嚟香港 lai4 hoeng1 gong2 and 玩 waan2. The second verb phrase 去日本 heoi3 jat6 bun2 is the purpose of the first verb phrase 探朋友 taam3 pang4 jau5. The person goes to Japan because he or she wants to visit friends in Japan. The subject 我 ngo5 is the person who performs both 去日本 heoi3 jat6 bun2 and 探朋友 taam3 pang4 jau5.To ask about the purpose for a movement, we can put 做乜嘢 zou6 mat1 je5 / 做咩 zou6 me1 (‘to do + what’) at the position of the second verb phrase.
Serial verb constructions are different from verb phrases connected with conjunctions like 同 tung4 (‘and’) and 同埋 tung4 maai4 (‘and’). For verb phrases connected with conjunctions, we can usually change the order of the verb phrases freely without changing the meaning too much. For serial verb constructions, if we change the order of the verb phrases, we will distort the meaning.
Verb Phrases Connected with a Conjunction:
✔️ 我識彈琴同彈結他嘅。
ngo5 sik1 taan4 kam4 tung4 taan4 git3 taa1 ge3.
I know how to play the piano and the guitar.
✔️ 我識彈結他同彈琴嘅。
ngo5 sik1 taan4 git3 taa1 tung4 taan4 kam4 ge3.
I know how to play the guitar and the piano.
The meaning is basically the same even if the order of the two verb phrases is changed.
Serial Verb Construction:
✔️ 我嚟香港讀書嘅。
ngo5 lai4 hoeng1 gong2 duk6 syu1 ge3.
I come to Hong Kong to study.
❌ 我讀書嚟香港嘅。
ngo5 duk6 syu1 lai4 hoeng1 gong2 ge3.
The meaning is distorted if the order of the two verb phrases is changed.
The first verb phrase can also be a verb that doesn’t indicate movement. We will see some examples in later lessons.
8.6 Verbs for Movement I
We will learn three common verbs for movement in this lesson. Notice below that we place the locations right after the verbs, without needing to add a preposition in between as we do in English.
The verb 去 heoi3 means ‘to go’. We use 去 heoi3 to indicate movement from our current position or where we usually stay (e.g., our country, city, home or office) to a more distant position.
我去日本讀書。
ngo5 heoi3 jat6 bun2 duk6 syu1.
I go to Japan to study.
The verb 嚟 lai4 (also pronounced as lei4) means ‘to come’. We use 嚟 lai4 to indicate movement from a more distant position to our current position or where we usually stay.
我嚟香港做嘢。
ngo5 lai4 hoeng1 gong2 zou6 je5.
I come to Hong Kong to work.
The verb 返 faan1 means ‘to go back’. We use 返 faan1 to indicate movement from our current position to our prior position or where we usually stay.
我返香港探朋友。
ngo5 faan1 hoeng1 gong2 taam3 pang4 jau5.
I go back to Hong Kong to visit friends.

8.7 Vocabulary List
8.8 Vocabulary: Places Around the World
We can add the word 人 jan4 (‘person’) after a place (e.g., a country or a city) to indicate that someone is from that place.
The word 國 gwok3 means ‘country’. It appears in the names of several countries, such as 英國 jing1 gwok3 (‘the UK’) and 美國 mei5 gwok3 (‘the US’).

Communication
In the Communication section, you will learn:
- Talking About Where Someone Comes From
- Talking About the Purpose for Visiting a Place
Talking About Where Someone Comes From
The verb 嚟 lai4 (‘to come’) and the sentence particle 嚟 lai4 (for assertion) will appear frequently in the expressions below. Although they are pronounced the same, they are different words.
- We can optionally omit 嘅 ge3 in 邊度嘅人 bin1 dou6 ge3 jan4.
- We don’t omit 嘅 ge3 in 邊個國家嘅人 bin1 go3 gwok3 gaa1 ge3 jan4.
If we want to know the city too, we can ask:
- We don’t omit 嘅 ge3 in 邊個城市嘅人 bin1 go3 sing4 si5 ge3 jan4.
As what we want to ask is obvious in the context, we can simply say:
Sometimes we may guess where someone comes from. To check if we are correct, we can ask:
- If we are quite certain that we are correct, we can use the sentence particle 呀 aa4. The sentence particles 嘅 ge3 and 呀 aa4 are contracted to 㗎 gaa4.
Talking About the Purpose for Visiting a Place
- We can omit the place if it is obvious in the context.
