36.8 Vocabulary: Places in a Community I
We use 舖 pou3 (in Tone 3) to mean ‘shop’ when we don’t specify the type of product or service that a shop sells.
We can put 舖 pou2 (‘shop’, in Tone 2) or 店 dim3 (‘shop’) after a type of product or service to refer to a shop that sells that type of product or service.
麵包 + 舖 = ✔️ 麵包舖
min6 baau1 + pou2 = ✔️ min6 baau1 pou2
bread + shop = bakery
麵包 + 店 = ✔️ 麵包店
min6 baau1 + dim3 = ✔️ min6 baau1 dim3
bread + shop = bakery
For some shops, we can only use either 舖 pou2 (‘shop’) or 店 dim3 (‘shop’), but not both.
便利 + 舖 = ❌ 便利舖
bin6 lei6 + pou2 = ❌ bin6 lei6 pou2
convenience + shop = convenience store
便利 + 店 = ✔️ 便利店
bin6 lei6 + dim3 = ✔️ bin6 lei6 dim3
