- The Adverb 太 taai3 (‘too; so’)
- The Suffix 得滯 dak1 zai6 (‘too’)
- The Adverb 夠 gau3 (‘enough’)
- The Adverb 有少少 jau5 siu2 siu2 (‘a little bit’)

- The Verb 覺得 gok3 dak1 (‘to think’)
- The Question Word 點 dim2 / 點樣 dim2 joeng2 (‘how’) I (Opinion)
- Vocabulary List
- Vocabulary: Commenting on Food II
33.1 Classifiers for Food and Drinks III (Food and Drinks at the Table)
When we comment on the food and drinks served at the table, we can use these classifiers:
When you’re not sure, it is usually safe to use 個 go3 for a dish, or 啲 di1 for a type of food.
33.2 The Adverb 太 taai3 (‘too; so’)
The adverb 太 taai3 means ‘too’ (as in too salty). We put 太 taai3 before an adjective to indicate that something is more than is suitable. In this lesson, we will use 太 taai3 as the degree word for a predicative adjective. When we use 太 taai3 as the degree word for a predicative adjective, we often use the sentence particle 喇 laa3 at the same time.
To soften the statement and make it sound less firm, we can add 好似 hou2 ci5 (‘seem’) before 太 taai3 and 噉 gam2 (‘seem’) after the adjective.
太 taai3 can also mean ‘so’ (as in so delicious). We can use 太 taai3 to emphasize how good something or someone is.
33.3 The Suffix 得滯 dak1 zai6 (‘too’)
The suffix 得滯 dak1 zai6 means ‘too’ (as in too salty). We put 得滯 dak1 zai6 after an adjective to indicate that something is more than is suitable. In this lesson, we will use 得滯 dak1 zai6 with a predicative adjective. Since 得滯 dak1 zai6 already indicates a degree, we don’t need to add a degree word before the predicative adjective. When we use 得滯 dak1 zai6 with a predicative adjective, we often use the sentence particle 喇 laa3 at the same time.
To soften the statement and make it sound less firm, we can add 好似 hou2 ci5 (‘seem’) before the adjective and 噉 gam2 (‘seem’) after 得滯 dak1 zai6.
33.4 The Adverb 夠 gau3 (‘enough’)
In Grammar and Vocabulary 27.9, we learned that the adjective 夠 gau3 means ‘enough’.
| A: | 啲嘢夠唔夠呀? di1 je5 gau3 m4 gau3 aa3? Are the things enough? |
| B: | 夠呀。 gau3 aa3. Yes. |
We can also use the word 夠 gau3 as an adverb. 夠 gau3 also means ‘enough’ as an adverb. We use it to indicate the degree of an adjective is enough (as in soft enough). We put 夠 gau3 before the adjective, like other degree words. In this lesson, we will use 夠 gau3 with a predicative adjective.
We add the adverb 唔 m4 (‘not’) before 夠 gau3 to mean ‘not … enough’.
We add the adverb 未 mei6 (‘not yet’) before 夠 gau3 to mean ‘not … enough yet’.
We use the X-not-X construction to form yes-no questions with 夠 gau3. Notice X will be 夠 gau3 instead of the adjective behind it.
你夠唔夠飽呀?
nei5 gau3 m4 gau3 baau2 aa3?
Are you full enough?
To answer the question, we can give a long answer or a short answer. We give a short answer more often. We form a short answer by omitting the subject and the adjective after 夠 gau3 in the long answer.
33.5 The Adverb 有少少 jau5 siu2 siu2 (‘a little bit’)
The adverb 有少少 jau5 siu2 siu2 means ‘a little bit’. We put 有少少 jau5 siu2 siu2 before an adjective. In this lesson, we will use 有少少 jau5 siu2 siu2 as the degree word for a predicative adjective.
有少少 jau5 siu2 siu2 is similar to the adverb 有啲 jau5 di1 (‘a bit’), but 有少少 jau5 siu2 siu2 usually indicates a slightly smaller degree than 有啲 jau5 di1. Compare:
啲叉燒有少少鹹。
di1 caa1 siu1 jau5 siu2 siu2 haam4.
The char siu is a little bit salty.
啲叉燒有啲鹹。
di1 caa1 siu1 jau5 di1 haam4.
The char siu is a bit salty.
The first sentence with 有少少 jau5 siu2 siu2 indicates a slightly smaller degree of saltiness than the second sentence with 有啲 jau5 di1.
33.6 The Sentence Particle 囉 lo1 (Dissatisfaction)
When making a negative comment, we can use the sentence particle 囉 lo1 to add a sense of dissatisfaction to the sentence.
個炒飯好油囉。
go3 caau2 faan6 hou2 jau4 lo1.
The fried rice is very greasy.
個湯超鹹囉。
go3 tong1 ciu1 haam4 lo1.
The soup is super salty.
In this lesson, we will also encounter 囉 lo1 in the expression 係囉 hai6 lo1. 係囉 hai6 lo1 means ‘yes’ and is used to show agreement with a comment made by other people. Note that it can be used to agree with both positive and negative comments. Unlike the use discussed above, 囉 lo1 doesn’t show dissatisfaction in this expression. This is another use of 囉 lo1, but we won’t examine it further here.
| A: | 個炒飯好好味喎。 go3 caau2 faan6 hou2 hou2 mei6 wo3. The fried rice is very delicious. |
| B: | 係囉,幾好味喎。 hai6 lo1, gei2 hou2 mei6 wo3. Yes, it is quite delicious. |
| A: | 個炒飯超油喎。 go3 caau2 faan6 ciu1 jau4 wo3. The fried rice is super greasy. |
| B: | 係囉,好油喎。 hai6 lo1, hou2 jau4 wo3. Yes, it is very greasy. |
33.7 The Verb 覺得 gok3 dak1 (‘to think’)
The verb 覺得 gok3 dak1 means ‘to think’ in the sense of ‘to have a particular opinion’. We use 覺得 gok3 dak1 to indicate that we are expressing an opinion. We put the opinion after 覺得 gok3 dak1.
We often add 我覺得 ngo5 gok3 dak1 (‘I think…’) before a negative opinion to show that we are simply expressing our personal view. This softens the negative opinion and makes it sound less firm.
33.8 The Question Word 點 dim2 / 點樣 dim2 joeng2 (‘how’) I (Opinion)
The question word 點 dim2 / 點樣 dim2 joeng2 is similar to how in English (as in how is your fried rice?). We can use 點 dim2 / 點樣 dim2 joeng2 to form a question that elicits opinions about something or someone as the answer. We put 點 dim2 / 點樣 dim2 joeng2 after the thing or the person we ask about.
| A: | 你個炒飯點呀? nei5 go3 caau2 faan6 dim2 aa3? 你個炒飯點樣呀? nei5 go3 caau2 faan6 dim2 joeng2 aa3? How is your fried rice? |
| B: | 我個炒飯好好味呀。 ngo5 go3 caau2 faan6 hou2 hou2 mei6 aa3. My fried rice is very delicious. |
We can use the verb 覺得 gok3 dak1 (‘to think’) at the same time.
| A: | 你覺得條魚點呀? nei5 gok3 dak1 tiu4 jyu2 dim2 aa3? 你覺得條魚點樣呀? nei5 gok3 dak1 tiu4 jyu2 dim2 joeng2 aa3? What do you think about the fish? |
| B: | 我覺得條魚好新鮮呀。 ngo5 gok3 dak1 tiu4 jyu2 hou2 san1 sin1 aa3. I think the fish is very fresh. |
We sometimes omit the noun phrase before 點 dim2 / 點樣 dim2 joeng2 if it is obvious in the context.
| A: | 你覺得 nei5 gok3 dak1 你覺得 nei5 gok3 dak1 What do you think about it? |
| B: | 我覺得 ngo5 gok3 dak1 I think it is very fresh. |
33.9 Vocabulary List
33.10 Vocabulary: Commenting on Food II
Degree Words
We put a degree word before an adjective.
Positive Adjectives
We usually use the adjectives below with the noun 味 mei6 (‘taste’).
啲味好濃。
di1 mei6 hou2 nung4.
The taste is thick.
Negative Adjectives
Neutral Adjectives
Culture
We sometimes compare different experiences in life to different tastes in food. We can use the term 甜酸苦辣 tim4 syun1 fu2 laat6 (‘sweet + sour + bitter + spicy’) to refer to these different experiences in life.
Communication
In the Communication section, you will learn:
- Talking About Food
- Finishing a Meal
Talking About Food
When having a meal with other people, we often make comments on the dishes. If we make comment on a dish immediately after trying it, we can treat the comments as realization and use the sentence particle 喎 wo3. Notice below we also use other sentence particles depending on the meaning of the sentence.
Positive Comments
- We can use 同埋 tung4 maai4 (‘and’) to introduce an additional positive comment.
- We can use 不過 bat1 gwo3 (‘but’) to introduce a negative comment.
Negative Comments
- We can use 同埋 tung4 maai4 (‘and’) to introduce an additional negative comment.
- We can use 不過 bat1 gwo3 (‘but’) to introduce a positive comment.
We can also indicate the food we are commenting on. Here are some examples:
If we want to ask for other people’s comments, we can say:
- We can contract 好唔好 hou2 m4 hou2 to 好冇 hou2 mou2.
If we order our own food individually and want to ask for someone’s comments on their own food, we can say:
To answer the questions, we can use the expressions for positive or negative comments mentioned above. If the questions are asked immediately after we have tried a dish, we can treat the comments as realization and continue using the sentence particle 喎 wo3. However, if the questions are asked after we have been eating the dish for a while, we don’t usually treat the comments as realization. In that case, we can replace 喎 wo3 with 呀 aa3, while keeping other sentence particles unchanged. Here are some examples:
The server may sometimes ask how we feel about the food.
- The person 你哋 nei5 dei6 (‘you’) is omitted between 啱 ngaam1 (‘to suit’) and 食 sik6 (‘to eat’) because it is obvious in the context.
If we want to check if something is spicy, we can ask:
Finishing a Meal
If we want to check if the food is enough, we can ask:
If we want to check if other people are full, we can ask:
If we worry that someone hasn’t eaten enough, we can ask:
