27.5 The Sentence Particle 喎 wo3 (Realization)

We can use the sentence particle 喎 wo3 to indicate realization or help the listener realize something. We use 喎 wo3 when we say something that we or the listener wasn’t aware of previously. 喎 wo3 also signals that what we are saying is noteworthy and the listener should pay attention to it.

A:呢個好似好好味噉
ni1 go3 hou2 ci5 hou2 hou2 mei6 gam2 wo3.
This one seems very delicious.
Speaker A has realized that a dish looks delicious and wants to draw Speaker B’s attention to it.
B:好似有啲貴噉
hou2 ci5 jau5 di1 gwai3 gam2 wo3.
It seems a bit expensive.
Speaker B has realized that the dish is expensive and wants to help Speaker A realize that.
A:係喎,好貴
hai6 wo3, hou2 gwai3 wo3!
Oh, it’s very expensive!
Speaker A has realized that the dish is actually very expensive.
