Grammar and Vocabulary
In the Grammar and Vocabulary section, you will learn:
- Omission in Verb Phrases
- Verbs for Movement III
- Indicating Preferences with 想 soeng2 (‘to want to’) and 多啲 do1 di1 (‘more’)
- Suggesting New Options with 定 ding6 / 定係 ding6 hai6 (‘or’)
- Vocabulary List
19.1 Omission in Verb Phrases
If a verb phrase is obvious in the context, we can often omit part of it, instead of saying the entire verb phrase. For example, after we have mentioned a verb phrase in full the first time, we can often omit part of it when referring to it again. Here are two general rules for omitting part of a verb phrase after mentioning the verb phrase the first time:
1. We can often omit the object if there is one.
| A: | 你想去邊度食日本嘢呀? nei5 soeng2 heoi3 bin1 dou6 sik6 jat6 bun2 je5 aa3? Where do you want to go to eat Japanese cuisine or food? |
| B: | 我想去旺角食呀。 ngo5 soeng2 heoi3 wong6 gok3 sik6 aa3. I want to go to Mong Kok [a district in Hong Kong] to eat. |
2. If the verb is a separable verb, we can often keep the first syllable (the verb part) and omit the other syllables (the object part). Note that for some separable verbs, the object part has more than one syllable (e.g., 邊爐 bin1 lou4 in 打邊爐 daa2 bin1 lou4). We will omit all the syllables of the object part.
| A: | 你想去邊度打邊爐呀? nei5 soeng2 heoi3 bin1 dou6 daa2 bin1 lou4 aa3? Where do you want to go to have hotpot? |
| B: | 我想去旺角打呀。 ngo5 soeng2 heoi3 wong6 gok3 daa2 aa3. I want to go to Mong Kok to have hotpot. |
19.2 Verbs for Movement III
We will learn one more common verb for movement below.
The verb 出 ceot1 means ‘to go out’. We can put it before an activity if we go out or go to another location to do the activity. When we use 出 ceot1, the destination is usually somewhere outside our immediate neighborhood but still within the same city, and it can be reached within one or two hours.
不如出旺角食吖。
bat1 jyu4 ceot1 wong6 gok3 sik6 aa1.
Why don’t we go out to Mong Kok [a district in Hong Kong] to eat?
19.3 Indicating Preferences with 想 soeng2 (‘to want to’) and 多啲 do1 di1 (‘more’)
When discussing two or more options, we often need to indicate preferences. We can combine the modal verb 想 soeng2 (‘to want to’) and the adverb 多啲 do1 di1 (‘more’, in the sense of ‘to a greater degree’, as in I like pizza more) to indicate that we prefer one option to the other options. The meaning of the sentence will be ‘I want to … more’. We put 多啲 do1 di1 after the option.
To ask for preferences among two or more options, we can use the conjunction 定 ding6 / 定係 ding6 hai6 (‘or’). The meaning of the question will be ‘Do you want to … or … more?’.
If the two options have the same verb, we can optionally omit the verb in the second option.
Let’s look at the examples above in a context:
| A: | 不如去旺角或者銅鑼灣食吖。 bat1 jyu4 heoi3 wong6 gok3 waak6 ze2 tung4 lo4 waan1 sik6 aa1. Why don’t we go to Mong Kok or Causeway Bay to eat? |
| B: | 好呀。 hou2 aa3. Good. [= Sure.] |
| A: | 噉你想去旺角定銅鑼灣多啲呀? gam2 nei5 soeng2 heoi3 wong6 gok3 ding6 tung4 lo4 waan1 do1 di1 aa3? Do you want to go to Mong Kok or go to Causeway Bay more then? |
| B: | 我想去旺角多啲呀。 ngo5 soeng2 heoi3 wong6 gok3 do1 di1 aa3. I want to go to Mong Kok more. |
19.4 Suggesting New Options with 定 ding6 / 定係 ding6 hai6 (‘or’)
After discussing some options, we sometimes want to suggest a new option. We can use the conjunction 定 ding6 or 定係 ding6 hai6 (‘or’) to suggest a new option and ask for opinions. We put 定 ding6 or 定係 ding6 hai6 before the subject. We usually add the sentence particle 呀 aa3 at the same time.
定我哋去旺角食呀?
ding6 ngo5 dei6 heoi3 wong6 gok3 sik6 aa3?
定係我哋去旺角食呀?
ding6 hai6 ngo5 dei6 heoi3 wong6 gok3 sik6 aa3?
Or we go to Mong Kok [a district in Hong Kong] to eat?
We often omit the subject if it is obvious in the context.
定我哋去旺角食呀?
ding6 ngo5 dei6 heoi3 wong6 gok3 sik6 aa3?
定係我哋去旺角食呀?
ding6 hai6 ngo5 dei6 heoi3 wong6 gok3 sik6 aa3?
