Taking a Taxi
Before getting on a taxi, we can ask the driver to open the trunk for us to store luggage or large items.
After we get into the taxi, the driver will ask for our destination.
If our destination requires the taxi to cross the harbor between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, the driver may ask which cross harbor tunnel we want to use. There are three of them: 紅隧 hung4 seoi6 (Hung Hom Tunnel), 東隧 dung1 seoi6 (‘Eastern Tunnel’) and 西隧 sai1 seoi6 (‘Western Tunnel’).
When the taxi arrives at the destination, the driver will ask where we want to get off.
If the driver hasn’t asked us but we want to get off, we can say:
If the driver can’t stop the taxi at that location, they will say:
If our destination is a housing estate, the driver may ask if we need them to drive inside the estate.
When the taxi stops, the driver will work out the fare.
- We may need to pay a return toll to cover the driver’s cost for using the cross-harbor tunnel to return to where they drove from.
Sometimes the driver may round up the fare as they don’t want to get coins.
