We can use adverbs to modify verbs. We generally put the adverb before the verb we want to modify.

The adverb 都 dou1 means ‘too’ or ‘also’. We put 都 dou1 before the verb we want to modify.

The conjunction 同 tung4 means ‘and’. We use 同 tung4 to join two or more items.

When there are more than two items, we add 同 tung4 before the last item.

We sometimes add 同 tung4 between every item, especially when we are coming up with the items immediately so we are not sure which is the last item.

同埋 tung4 maai4 also means ‘and’. We can use 同埋 tung4 maai4 to join two or more items too.

To mean ‘and’, we can use 同 tung4 and 同埋 tung4 maai4 interchangeably. However, note that 同 tung4 and 同埋 tung4 maai4 are not always interchangeable in other contexts.

When listing items (usually more than two items), we can optionally add the sentence particle 啦 laa1 after each item. For the last item, we can choose to add or not add 啦 laa1.

Note that 啦 laa1 is optional. We can list items without adding 啦 laa1.

The question word 咩 me1 is similar to what in English. We can use 咩 me1 to form a question that elicits a thing as the answer.

To make a question more specific, we can use 咩 me1 with a noun that specifies the type of thing we want to ask about.

咩 me1 has three other forms: 咩嘢 me1 je5, 乜 mat1, and 乜嘢 mat1 je5. When forming a question, we can generally use all the forms interchangeably.

In Lesson 1, we learned that we can add the sentence particle 呀 aa3 at the end of a question. We can also use 呀 aa3 to add emphasis to a sentence.

For example, when we use the adverb 都 dou1 in a sentence, we often add 呀 aa3 to the sentence to emphasize that we have something in common.

In English, a verb phrase can’t usually be put directly in the subject or object position of a sentence. Some changes to the verb are usually required.

In Cantonese, we can put a verb phrase directly in the subject or object position of a sentence. We don’t need to make any changes to the verb phrase.
